Fernando Suels
Fernando Suels was born in Venezuela in 1968. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in movement and the performing arts, approaching dance as a form of personal expression and artistic research. In 1987, he began his dance studies in Caracas under the guidance of José Ledezma, a key figure in his early training. He later completed his studies at the Higher Institute of Dance and at the Danzahoy Dance School, where he developed a solid technical foundation and deepened his understanding of contemporary dance language.
During these years, he worked as a dancer in several productions directed by prominent choreographers such as José Ledezma, Luis Viana, and Luz Urdaneta. These experiences contributed significantly to his artistic and professional growth, allowing him to engage with different choreographic poetics and working methods.
From 1991 to 1995, Fernando Suels continued his training in Europe, studying at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany, a leading institution for contemporary dance and dance theatre. This period proved crucial in shaping his style and artistic sensibility. Upon completing his studies, he was selected to participate in a masterclass with Jean Cebron, an experience that further refined his interpretative and compositional approach.
In 1995, he joined the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, with which he worked continuously as a permanent member until July 2018. Over more than twenty years, he took part in almost all the creations of the company’s repertoire from that period, making a significant contribution to its artistic life. Among these works is also Pina Bausch’s final creation, produced in 2009 and titled “…como el musguito en la piedra, ay si si si…”, which represents a particularly important milestone in his career.
In 2018, Fernando Suels began a freelance career as an artist, choreographer, dancer, and dance teacher, further expanding his professional scope and sharing his extensive experience with new generations of dancers. At the same time, he has continued to perform with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch as a guest artist, maintaining a strong connection with the company.
In recent years, he has choreographed and performed in the production Al Igual Que Tú with Eva Yerbabuena’s flamenco company, a project that reflects his interest in dialogue between different choreographic languages and traditions. More recently, Fernando Suels has been a guest teacher and choreographer at the Tampa City Ballet in the United States, continuing his international activity as a performer and educator.
