  • Contemporary / Neoclassical — focus on improvisation and composition; age: varied (12+); duration: 2–7 minutes; attire: minimalist to highlight the body’s lines; music: both original pieces and atmospheric tracks. Advice: pay attention to transitions and stage presence.
  • Urban / Hip-Hop — Categories for street styles (hip-hop, break, popping); age: often divided into age groups (under 12, 13-17, adults); duration: 2–5 minutes; attire: technical sneakers, form-fitting but flexible clothing; music: tracks with a clear beat. Tip: Pay attention to the group’s musicality and stage presence.
  • Modern Dance / Jazz — Technique, dynamics, and theatricality; age: 10+; duration: 2–6 minutes; attire: jazz shoes or bare feet depending on the rules; music: rhythmic arrangements. Tip: Balance technique and performance to highlight personality.
  • Talent / TV Format — Selections for television or web formats; age: variable; duration: 1–3 minutes for video auditions; attire: determined by the casting; music: often requires edited tracks or soundtracks. Tip: Submit high-quality videos and take care with the audition packaging.
  • School / Ensemble Competition — Rankings for groups and institutions; age: multiple categories; Running time: 3–10 minutes; attire: group uniforms or costumes; music: mixes and medleys are permitted if regulations allow. Tip: Work on synchronization and creating a scenic focal point.

Use these guidelines as a quick checklist to choose the right music, costume, and running time.

Complete practical guide for registering for a dance competition

This step-by-step guide takes you from identifying the competition to the on-stage performance. Follow the order to avoid missing deadlines or important documents.

1) How to choose the right competition

Choose based on: predominant style, experience level, goals (visibility vs. scholarship), logistical distance, and budget. Check whether the competition requires preliminary videos or live performance only.

2) Typical timing

  • Registration: 6 to 2 months before the event (deadlines vary).
  • Submitting music/video: usually 2–4 weeks before.
  • Confirmation and order numbers: 1–2 weeks before or on the day of the rehearsal.

3) Required Documents

  • Registration form with participant and author/choreographer information.
  • Releases for the use of images and music (if required).
  • Any medical certificates for competitive categories.
  • Parental authorization for minors.

4) Average Costs and Refund Policies

Costs vary: solo registration 35–110 EUR, ensemble 50–300 EUR. Check cancellation and refund policies, and whether discounts are available for schools or multiple categories.

5) Technical and Mental Preparation: 8-Week Training Plan

  1. Weeks 1–2: Technical evaluation and selection of strengths.
  2. Weeks 3–4: Technical consolidation and first full choreographic rehearsals.
  3. Weeks 5–6: Simulate competition conditions (costume rehearsal and live music/video).
  4. Weeks 7–8: Finishing, anxiety management, and physical recovery (stretching, careful sleep).

Pro tip: Integrate guided imagery sessions and mental rehearsals to reduce performance stress.

6) Logistics on the day of the competition
